2021 was the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Marija Gimbutas, the world-renowned, Lithuanian archeologist. She defined the location of the origin of Indo-Europeans (Kurgan hypothesis), she discovered the ancient matrifocal European civilization, coined the term “Mother Goddess” and founded archaeomythology.
To honor her, that year I undertook a 230 boulder installation at the base of Varnupiai Sacred Mound (piliakalnis) in Lithuania. This mound is at least 5,000 years old. The distribution of the stones is in keeping with her own excavation results (1946 PhD thesis, University of Tubingen). The final stone was placed on the fall equinox, September 21, 2022.
Each stone is numbered and has an affixed, numbered aluminum plate. Almost all of the stones are “owned” by local residents. Thus, this installation bridges ancient Lithuanian-European history, the current residents who are owners of the boulders, and the future since their children will inherit them.
This distribution of 230 boulders will also be matched to 230 stars in the Milky Way. Each stone will have its own celestial accompaniment.
We still have 79 unassigned boulders. Instead of limiting ownership to local residents, I am now offering them to the international community.
The first 29 boulders ordered are priced at $100 each. The next 25 at $150, and the final 25 at $200. Payment can be made by PayPal or check. The owner’s names and boulder numbers will be listed on a separate website.
The amount of work and expense that has gone into this project has thus far been incredible. We still have upcoming expenses: the installation of a large explanatory plaque. Your financial assistance will be appreciated. And you will become a part of a significant artistic project.
The available stones are numbered are listed in the accompanying posting, and will be updated continuously.
Pick out your stone, or stones, and contact me at PlioplysArt@gmail.com about availability and payment method.
